DVD/BLU-RAY Combo Packs

DVD/Blu-ray Combo Pack Cataloging Policy

To provide better clarity for both library staff and patrons, the Technical Services Committee has updated the recommendations for handling multi-disc combo packs.

The Problem with Separate Records

In the past, the SEO cataloging team suggested separating DVD/Blu-ray combo packs into their respective formats. If a set was not separated, a unique "combo pack" record was required. This often led to confusion in the catalog, as users would see three distinct results for a single movie: a DVD record, a Blu-ray record, and a Combo Pack record.

New Policy Recommendation: Combo packs no longer require a separate bibliographic record. You may now catalog a combo pack on the DVD record or the Blu-ray record, depending on what works best for your library's workflow.

Best Practices

  • While separate records are no longer required, separating the discs into different cases is still highly encouraged to prevent loss and improve circulation tracking.
  • Ensure the 500 note field in the MARC record clearly indicates that the item is a combo pack if the discs are kept together.
